Tour Plan
6:00 AM - Early Departure from Luxor
Your private guide and driver will pick you up from your hotel or Nile cruise in an air-conditioned vehicle.
Enjoy a packed breakfast or ensure you've eaten at the hotel. The drive to Abydos is approximately 3 hours.
9:00 AM - 11:30 AM - Stop 1: Temple of Seti I at Abydos
The Experience: Abydos was one of the most sacred ancient Egyptian cities, believed to be the burial place of Osiris, god of the afterlife. This temple is renowned for its exquisite raised relief carvings that look like they were finished yesterday.
Key Highlights to See:
The Abydos King List: A famous wall carving showing Pharaoh Seti I and his son, Ramses II, venerating 76 of their royal predecessors (conveniently omitting "illegitimate" pharaohs like Hatshepsut and Akhenaten).
The Seven Sanctuaries: Dedicated to six gods and the deified Seti I himself.
The Osireion: A mysterious, massive granite structure located behind the main temple, believed to be a symbolic tomb of Osiris. Its architecture is starkly different and incredibly imposing.
11:30 AM - 1:30 PM - Stop 2: Drive from Abydos to Dendera
The drive between the two temples is about 1 hour. This is a good time to discuss what you've just seen with your guide.
1:30 PM - 2:00 PM - Stop 3: Lunch
Enjoy a traditional Egyptian lunch at a recommended local restaurant near Dendera.
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM - Stop 4: Temple of Hathor at Dendera
The Experience: This magnificent temple complex is dedicated to Hathor, goddess of love, joy, music, and motherhood. It is famously well-preserved, with vast stone ceilings still covered in original soot and stunningly vivid color in many places.
Key Highlights to See:
The Hypostyle Hall with its 24 columns crowned by Hathor-headed capitals.
The famous "Dendera Zodiac" (a replica; the original is in the Louvre) on a ceiling.
The cryptic subterranean crypts, where the famous "Dendera light" carving is located.
Climbing to the roof for breathtaking views of the entire complex and the surrounding landscape.
3:30 PM - 5:00 PM - Return Drive to Luxor
Relax in the car after a day of exploration. The drive back to your hotel takes about 1.5 hours.
Evening: Free Time in Luxor
Enjoy dinner at your leisure. You could ask your guide for recommendations for a traditional restaurant or a place with a view of the Nile.
8:00 AM - Meet your guide and Cross to the West Bank
Your guide and driver will pick you up. You'll take a short ferry or car boat ride across the Nile to the West Bank, enjoying beautiful morning views.
8:30 AM - 10:30 AM - Stop 1: Valley of the Kings
The Experience: The burial place of Egypt's New Kingdom pharaohs. Your ticket includes entry to 3 selected tombs (excluding the tombs of Ramses VI and Tutankhamun, which require separate tickets). Your guide will help you choose the best ones open that day.
Pro Tip: Highly consider the extra ticket for Tutankhamun's tomb to see his mummy, or for the spectacular Tomb of Ramses V/VI if available.
10:45 AM - 12:00 PM - Stop 2: Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut (Deir el-Bahari)
The Experience: A stunning, multi-level temple built into the cliffs, dedicated to the powerful female pharaoh Hatshepsut. Its modern architecture is strikingly different from other temples.
12:15 PM - 12:45 PM - Stop 3: The Colossi of Memnon
The Experience: A quick photo stop at these two massive stone statues of Pharaoh Amenhotep III. They are all that remains of his vast mortuary temple.
1:00 PM - 2:00 PM - Stop 4: Lunch
Enjoy lunch at a restaurant on the West Bank with views of the Theban mountains.
2:30 PM - 4:30 PM - Stop 5: Karnak Temple (East Bank)
The Experience: The largest religious building ever constructed. A vast complex of sanctuaries, pylons, and obelisks built over 2,000 years. The scale is unimaginable until you are there.
Key Highlights to See:
The Great Hypostyle Hall: A forest of 134 massive columns, the largest in the world.
The sacred Lake Precinct.
The Obelisk of Hatshepsut, the tallest in Egypt.
5:00 PM - 6:30 PM - Stop 6: Luxor Temple (East Bank)
The Experience: Best visited in the late afternoon as the temperature cools. This temple is beautifully lit at night, offering a different perspective. It was connected to Karnak by a 3km-long avenue of sphinxes.
Key Highlights to See: The massive statues of Ramses II at the entrance, the colonnades of Amenhotep III, and the sections built by Alexander the Great.
6:30 PM - End of Tour & Drop-off
Your guide and driver will drop you off at your hotel or at a restaurant of your choice, concluding your two-day deep dive into ancient Egyptian history.
